I think the simple explanation is that Peter thought that it was yet another vison he saw when he was freed from prison. That is made clear in the next verse: Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision.
What can I learn from this?
If the Holy Spirit can make reality look like a vision, he must also be the one who is able to transform a God-given vision to reality. It is likely that a scholar would call this "simplified theology”, but it is still true and an important reminder that a vision is only a motivation – because a vision does never become a reality all by itself.
'Manna' for today:
Then the angel said to him, “Put on your clothes and sandals.” And Peter did so. “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me,” the angel told him.How come that an angel had to ask an adult man to get dressed?

If the Holy Spirit is the giver and sustainer of a vision, it will become a reality.
