"By what power or what name did you do this?"The question is addressed to Peter and John by the Jewish Council (1) after the miracle at the Beautiful gate. Peter and John have been in jail overnight. The interrogation is real, but the question is also legitimate. It was the Council's responsibility to protect the faith. The maintenance of the faith was crucial for the identity of the Jewish people.

When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realised that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.The Holy Spirit can use unschooled people in a way that leaves even the most knowledgeable unable to respond. The Council had to take "time-out" to discuss the matter. The problem was that they discussed it with one another and not with God - thus, there was no solution.
